Message from the Chairperson
Welcome to the Department of Animal Science. It is one of the youngest departments at the Meru University of Science and Technology. It was established as a fully-fledged Department in 2018. Previously Animal Science programs were administered under the Department of Agriculture. It aims to fill the educational system gap by training professional managers and researchers to contribute towards achieving part of the envisioned Big 4 Agenda items in Kenya. The livestock sector in Kenya contributes to 12% of Kenya’s national GDP. The industry supports most rural households’ livelihoods, including the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALS), where crop cultivation is impossible without irrigation. Further, many urban families directly depend on employment in livestock-related agro-processing industries.
About the Department
The department is committed to producing high-quality and trained graduates in the Livestock industry to meet the growing demand for animal origin foods. This objective is made possible by utilizing the unique capacities of well-trained staff members in three (3) programs offered in the department. The department has tailor-made and carefully thought out competency-hands-on based, science and practical oriented programs, namely;
- Animal Health and production(AHP)
- Upgrading Diploma AHP
- Certificate AHP
(All regulated by Kenya Veterinary Board)
Currently, the department enjoys the unique expertise of a specialized and highly committed team of lecturers and animal health technicians. Apart from training and teaching, members of academic staff are also actively involved in research. The department has linkages and collaborations with various stakeholders, ranging from government development agencies, private sector, and community-based organizations. Establishing a good rapport with the industry has given us a smooth ride in training, technology transfer, and disseminating scientific information generated within and outside the department.
