PLANT MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY (SBA 3150)[45 LH]

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

To provide learners with knowledge on the morphology and anatomy of plants and its link to plant functioning and other aspects of plant science

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES 

At the end of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Sketch and label plant organs, plant cells and tissues.
  2. Relate the structure of plant parts, organs, cells and tissues to the functioning of the plant.
  3. Prepare and mound cells and tissues samples for microscopic observation.
  4. Explain the basis of propagating plants from seed and vegetative parts.

COURSE CONTENT

Morphology of Plants: Plant organs: roots, stem, leaves, flower. Types of plant Cells, Types of plant tissues. Plant meristems and growth. Anatomy of dicotlydenous and monocotyledonous plants: Stem, root, leaf, flower, seed, fruit. Plasticity of plant organs. Sexual reproduction and seedling morphology. Asexual reproduction and totipotency. Anatomy and morphology of selected crops.
