EFN 3250: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION (45 LH)
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
To enable the learner conceptualize the relevance and relationship between sociology and education.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course unit the learners should be able to:-
- Describe meaning and importance of Sociology of Education
- Discuss origin and development of Sociology and Sociology of Education
- Analyze the complex relationship between Sociology and other social sciences
- Evaluate the relevance of sociology of education, and the process of socialization
COURSE CONTENT
Nature of sociological foundations, methods, branches, relationship with other social sciences and its sociological theories. School as a social institution. The role and function of education as an agent and instrument of social and cultural change in society, the social dynamics and education in the transmission of culture, social structure and social stratification.
Relations of sociology with education: role of the family and school as socializing agent; socialization as a process; The centrality of education as a means of transmission of culture through the teacher’s role in school and society; Role of politics and nation and their relations to sociology of education.
