PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

To introduce learners to the principles and broad aspects of animal production.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course the learner should be able to:-

  1. Outline the key principles in animal production.
  2. Describe the animal production systems.
  3. Describe the role of animal production in food security and the economy.
  4. Explain the environmental and social factors that influence animal production.

COURSE CONTENT

The history of animal production at global and national level. Importance of animal production: Food security, economy. Animal production: production systems, production practices, Types of animals and their census, animal products and uses. Integrated livestock and crop production systems. Environmental and social factors influencing animals.  Organic animal production: Definition, history of organic livestock production, Conversion from conventional to organic system.
